Using a mix of underground fiber and wireless transport, The University Center Metropolitan Area Network (UCMAN) was built originally to connect county government, the courts, schools and the University Center. However, soon after launch in 2005—at the request of local businesses and advisors—UCMAN was opened for general availability and to date the network is providing more than thirty Gaylord area businesses with wireless broadband Internet services. UCMAN has also established wireless hot spots at Glen’s Market, the University Center (interior and exterior) and throughout the central downtown business district of this historic northern Michigan community. |
